Nuova Sima, thanks to decades of experience in the production and applications of natural magnesium hydroxide as a flame retardant, is a key partner in a project co-funded by the European Union under the LIFE programme for sustainability and the circular economy.
The MareMag project (LIFE23-ENV-IT-MareMag LIFE) will develop a new process for the production of magnesium hydroxide, fuelled solely by renewable energy and residual brine from saltworks, without consuming additional chemicals.
The implementation of the MareMag LIFE project will prevent all impacts conventionally associated with the industrial production of magnesium hydroxide from mining or seawater, potentially reducing the carbon footprint associated with its production to zero and, through a circular economy approach, make these activities sustainable for the environment, the economy and the communities involved in the value chain.
The Kick-off meeting of the project, led by the University of Palermo and the Centre for Sustainability and Ecological Transition, was held on Wednesday 16 October 2024.
